I recently embarked on a 14-day-cleanse in order to remove “sensitive foods” from my diet. Basically, for 14 days, I cannot have sugar, gluten, caffeine, alcohol or dairy. I also have to cut out certain fruits with too much sugar, certain vegetables, and certain oils, among other things. (follow my cleanse recipes on instagram.)
I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE THINKING. TORTURE. TELL ME ABOUT IT.
But not really.
When I was first living on my own, and tried to be a vegetarian, I started being really creative in the kitchen. Certain things became staples: soy sauce for stir-fries, roasted broccoli and garlic with Extra Virgin olive oil, homemade pizza, etc.
I exercised a lot and typically added salads to my meals but I would still notice things that were “off” in my body; sensitive teeth, a feeling heaviness inside my body, etc. I like chocolate. Like, a lot. Sugar. Sugar. Sugar.
I have since realized that sugar is the Devil. (To educate yourself about the consequences of sugar in our diet, watch this new film, “Hungry for Change“. And be ready to have your mind blown, those who think diet soda is better for them!) Not that natural fruit sugars are something we should avoid. In fact, with the cleanse, I’m still allowed to eat mangoes, berries, kiwis, and a host of other types of fruit. But added sugar? NO WAY. Processed foods? NOPE.
When you go to the grocery store and start picking packages up, what is the first thing you look at – the nutrition label? Or…the ingredients? Today I always look at the ingredients first. Is “Enriched Flour” or the words “white” or “bleached” in one of the first three ingredients? I don’t buy it. I love coconut water. But if there is “Sugar” in the ingredient list at all, I don’t buy it. And if you see “high fructose” or “corn syrup” anywhere on that list, I would put it down and wash your hands with OnGuard essential oil immediately.
Just kidding.
But corn syrup is the Devil(Sugar)’s evil step sibling. It just doesn’t do nice things to your insides. For this cleanse, soy sauce is out the window, no more homemade pizzas…but I still love me some roasted broccoli and garlic. And tonight’s dish: Gluten-free-oat-battered Wild filets, Mashed cauliflower and Brussel sprouts. Cleansing is turning out to be not so bad. I feel cleaner, lighter, more energized.
Won’t you join me?
